I wanted to set up a software development business. I purchased MS Windows XP Professional wuth SP2, Along with Visual Studio .NET 2005, and Office 2003 Professional, Borland Delphi, and Rational Rose. As you can imagine this represents a considarable monatary investment. However, luck was not on my side, as I almost completed work on my first project, I left my computer turned on overnight and a small fire broke out. Luckily the damage was not serious except for the fact that the office desk and corner where I kept the CD's mentioned above, along with some valuable books, and all the receipts were burned to a crisp. As I only had them for a short while, I did not regrister them. So literally there is no proof that I ever owned them. My computer is also completely destroyed, but I wanted to know how I would go about getting another set of copies of the software I baught as I just dont have the funds to purchase them again, especially after repairing the office. What can I do.

Sorry, thanks for your answers so far. However, I was foolish enough to pay cash and only had paper receipts, which are all burned. Like I said, no proof. Also, my office is in the garage at the side of my house and as I work alone for now, I did not feel any need for insurance. So I am not covered by insurance too. But thanks so far for all your suggestions.

Given some of the suggestions made so far, I know this looks like I am trying to get free software. However, I am a software developer, and totally against piracy of any kind. I would even find it hard to justfiy using pirated copies of the software after spending so much even if I was unable ot get legal replacements. Thanks again!

If you didn't have fire insurance you're out of luck. Even if you can prove that you recently purchased the software, the vendor doesn't have to replace it.

If you do have fire insurance, the insurance company probably won't require proof. If they do, a credit card statement ought to work or a statement from the company from which you purchased the software.

(If you are lying, remember that being caught in insurance fraud is a pretty bad thing).

Good luck.

If you purchased the software on a credit card, that is proof of purchase. Go back to the store and explain to them what has happened with a copy of the credit card receipt, (with all that software...they will remember you) in such a short time. Explain what has happened and ask if they can give you a copy of the receipt they have on file. If so you can go from there and get the software back. I worked at a large company and the CD got stolen and Microsoft replaced them with a new key. So there is hope, IF you used a credit card or ATM to proof of purchase!

I would imange you have bought this with a check or credit card?

If its with a credit card then file a claim to have a reciept printed from them, and talk with the vendor you bought the software from, that should prove ownership. Then use that to have your software replaced through your insurance.
