It was "Dr. Jekyll" and "Mr.Hyde", if that helps you to remember. He wasn't much of a doctor as his monstrous alter-ego. :)

The answer is that the one individual who developed the two personalities was innocent. He was Dr. Jekyll and he was possessed by a drink. Once possessed he became the evil Mr. Hyde. It is possible that particles in the drink were intelligent and in command of the body and his mind was asleep while Mr. Hyde was running about doing the evil. There is a bar in New York City that has the name Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!
