If you are traveling in a car at 150 m/h with a mosquito inside the car. The windows are closed so the mosquito is flying around merrily. Now imagine if we lived in a world were wind does not exist.....what would happen if you suddenly open the window and let the mosquito out... given that their is no wind outside, will the mosquito be left behind or will it travel at the same speed as inside the car??? will choose best answer!

People (i don't mean everyone), it's fine to guess but please don't present it as if it's the right answer.

According to Newton's first law, the velocity of an object stays constant without a net external force. Without air, there is no source of external force except gravity. Thus the mosquito will have the same initial velocity as the car, then proceed to travel in a parabolic arc towards the ground.

The premise of "no wind" directly translates into a vacuum requirement.

Wind is the effect of the movement of air within the atmosphere. So there can't be wind if there is no air. Inside and outside the car there is air but only outside there is wind since the car's movement generates it. So your question should say: given that there is no AIR outside...
That is just what happens in a spacecraft. If you are traveling through space "outside" and "inside" there is no air, so a mosquito (a dead one of course) would still fly (float would be more precise) outside and inside at the same speed than your vehicle because, in a way, your vehicle does not generate wind.

A number of answers here. First, If air (wind) did not exist, the mosquito would be on the floorboard, probably towards the rear of the car and unable to exit. Lack of air renders their wings useless. If you're holding the mosquito in the car (in an airless environment) and you fling it out the window then the mosquito travels continuously until it hits something (similar to space debris).
...Back to our environment - the car is moving but the air outside is not. put the mosquito out, and the air stops it quickly, wind or no wind since mosquitos aren't built for 150mph.

did you ever saw action movies ?? imagine the mosquito is a person, what would happen ?? Anyway, the air inside of the car travels at the same speed as the car, the air outside would be still in that scenario. The mosquito would be left behind as it cant fly as fast as 150mph. Have fun :-))

the mosquito will continue flying with the same speed as the car. If there is no wind you can forget the car and the speed as there is no need for them. The mosquito would fly the same regardless of how fast the car is traveling. it's just like sitting in your backyard.

The instant you throw the bug out the window, it will be traveling 150 mi/hr. The mosquito will begin interacting with the air, creating aerodynamic drag.

Since the mosquito is light, it has little momentum (p=mv). Very quickly, the drag will "use up" all of the momentum the mosquito has, and it will be slowed down to zero air speed.

Since this is a windless planet, the mosquito did not evolve to deal with 150 mi/hr airflow. No doubt its wings would be torn off and it would be in great agony until it died.

Just because there is no wind does not mean there is no atmosphere. When the mosquito leaves the car it is moving at 150 mph, but because of it's relatively light weight, once it runs into the non-moving atmosphere, it will quickly lose its forward momentum, slowed down by air resistance, and so it will be left far behind.

Even if there is no wind per se, if you stuck your hand out the window, you would still feel air pressure that you would perceive as the wind blowing by.

If you live in a world with no wind, your planet must have no atmosphere. Therefore, I hope you are strapped in when you roll the window down, everything in the car will be pushed in the out direction, including the gasses in your body. You, and the mosquitoe will probably explode.

Wind is simply the movement of air. Air will move when it changes temperature (and thereby density) or when it encounters a force such as when we breath. You just can't have a planet that has air, but no wind.

It will travel at the same speed as the car for a short period of time untill gravity eventually pulled it to earth. And NO it could not just fly away you smart asses, because it would need air resistance to fly And considering that you removed air from the equation, that is the case. Of course after reveiwing your question again i notice that you use the word "wind" not air. I take it you mean air and are just to ignorant to know the differance. Of course if there were AIR the resistance that it caused would slow the bug down considerably faster.

well wind doesnt make the mosquito fly out anyways .. wind or not when your traveling at a certain sped the current is what would make the bug fly out .. when your traveling at any given speed a current of air "called wind" will have to be created ..

wind is not a factor here...on a calm day there is still "displacement" of air caused by the vehicle cutting through the air...if the mosquito was on the window he might be sucked out but the truth is ...have you ever tried to remove a *&#*$&#*$ mosquito from a moving car?!?!?...they fly to the back window and laff at you until they can move forward and suck from the back of your ear!
