westchester county ny rental, want to know the standard size required by law for stairs and do you have to have rails.

Stairs are highly regulated by whatever building code your community has adopted. The rise and run of the stairs themselves must fall within a narrow "no less than and no more than" range of measurement. The width of the stairs follows the same type of regulation.

The height and profile of the handrails will be specified as will the spacing of the balusters.

Overhead clearance can also be an issue.

Contact your local building inspectors office for information as to the regulations in your area.

yes, check your local codes for width. And yes, you must have rails on at least one side. You may run into handicap laws that require 42" width...check it out before you do anything, and you will have to have a permit to touch the job anyway.
