If you turn it off and on it actually take more energy, because the unit has to "power up" all the time. It's better to turn the thermostat up and then turn it down again when you get home.

leave it on, it takes more energy to cool off the house when it hot, if the house is cool and the furniture is kept at a cool temperature then ,the a/c will not have to work as hard to bring the temperature to the desired temperature. same goes for heat, a warm house uses less energy if left at a constant temperature, if you are gone for more than a day turn it down!

buy a digital thermostat which you can program - that way it maintains a temperature throughout the day and you can have it go higher or lower automatically.
Also run the fan all the time.

run it with the thermostat so that it runs warmer when you're not there, and cooler when you are...turning it off and on will only make it work that much harder to try to get to the temp you want.
