I don't love the guy or hate him, but I'm fascinated by his mysterious absence for the start of this season. I see no reason for him to sit other than the fear he would turn up + on a doping test.
So now that he's back, what are your expectations of him? Will he be worth $12,000,000 (about $6 per home game per fan) to the Astros?

Clemens gave up a HR and a double in the first inning of tonight's game - this is a Single A game, remember.

It seems like he did ok - 3 innings, settled down after the 1st inning though he did get into trouble one more time. Only gave up the HR then no more runs. June 11 is his next start for Corpus Christi.

I think he made a mistake coming back, and if the teams he pitches against don't get psyched out by his former reputation, I think he will lose more than he wins. In that case he most definitely will not be worth the huge amount of money Houston is paying him. Notice I never used the word "earn."

Clemens sat out the start of this season because the Astro's didn't offer him arbitration and so couldn't negotiate with him til May !. Don't forget he finished last year with nagging hammy and groin injuries and wanted the extra time to get his legs back under him. He started to wear down at the end of the season. As for steroids, that's bosh. The man has one of the hardest work out regimens and work ethics in baseball. It will take him a few starts to round into form but once the Astros kick in their usual second half surge and take the wild card at least, he'll be a lot stronger for the stretch run and playoffs than last year. I think 10-13 wins is a reasonable expectation.

edgecution4 is right, Clemens couldn't sign with the Astros before May 1st.
I expect Clemens will be OK, but nowhere near as good as last year.

He will be good, I dont think his resting had anything to do with him being worried about passing drug tests. He is very old for a professional athlete and would wear down very qickly. Look at barry bonds. He has to sit out roughly one game per series due to age. His performance last year leads me to believe he will be more then servicable. He is def. worth the money too because fans will want to see him for sure.

He couldnt sign with the astros until May 1st, and he wanted to spend time with his family, and was trying to decide if he wanted to come back. He also wanted to see if the team he went to was still in the race before he went there.

Frankly, I think Clemens has been getting a bit long in the tooth for some time....but it's hard for a guy to gracefully give up all that moolah.....

i don't think anyone's really worth $12M per year but i think he'll do very well and win 10-13 games.
