Is this what you're looking for?
/.*\.(.*)/

It saves everything after the last ".". You can use preg_match() with an output array in PHP or $1 in perl to capture the extension.

You just said it. "Extension".

The extension of a file tells you whether it is a document (.doc) word file (.txt), Excel file (.xl)..and so on. If it is Adobe it is .pdf.
Basically it is whatever the program uses for its extension (the part that appears after the dot)

Hope that helps
