A. When you get right down to it, everything is poisonous. Water will kill you if you drink too much of it. Oxygen is a deadly poison, yet we need it to live. However, there are some chemicals that we are better off not encountering. Here's a list of the most poisonous chemicals known. Keep in mind, toxicity varies from one species to another (i.e., what may be poisonous for a mouse may be more/less poisonous to a human) and within a species (i.e., age, sex, genetics all affect susceptibility to a toxin). I've listed the name of the toxin, its source, approximate average lethal dose per kilogram of body weight (LD50), and the species.

tetanus
1 nanogram/kg (1 nanogram = 1/1000 000 000th of a gram)
mouse, human

botulinal neurotoxin (bacteria)
1 nanogram/kg
mouse, human

shigella (bacteria)
1 nanogram/kg
monkey, human

palytoxin (coral)
60 nanogram/kg
dog (iv)

diphtheria (bacteria)
100 nanogram/kg
human

ricin (from castor beans)
1 microgram/kg
human

aflatoxins (mold which grows on nuts, legumes, seeds)
1-784 micrograms, depending on type of aflatoxin
duckling (oral)

shigella (bacteria)
1 microgram/kg
mouse

saxitoxin (shellfish)
3-5 micrograms
mouse (iv), about 50x higher dose orally

tetrodotoxin (fugu pufferfish)
10 micrograms
mouse (ip)

diphtheria (bacteria)
1.6 milligram/kg
mouse

Impossible to answer such a question without more information. Almost anything is toxic in a
large enough dose and harmless in a small enough dose. Also depends on how taken, breathed in, swallowed, touching the skin, injected,
etc. Also, toxic to whom or what? Some things
are very toxic to one animal and not to another.
Probably you mean toxic to humans, and a common measure of toxicity is by weight of
the toxin per pound or kilogram of weight of the
human. Since new toxins are always being made
or discovered the answer may change over time.

Botox? It is possibly the most acutely toxic substance known, with a lethal dose of about 200-300 pg/kg, meaning that somewhat over a hundred grams could kill every human on earth (for perspective, the rat poison Strychnine, often described as highly toxic, has an LD50 of 1 mg/kg, or 1 billion pg/kg).

In truthful response the most potent poison is hard to get. It derives from the Amazonian Golden Frog, used in arrow tips by the locals. That is the most toxic poison.

Raisins - even though some people like them.

Pretty much anything can be toxic in a high enough concentration - even water. Ricin in very small dose pretty much guarantees death. Potassium in a high enough dose will stop a heart.

Why do you ask?
