b - there is not enough money in the account to cover the check. This can be due to "floating" a check, which is writing a check with the expectation that the amount needed to cover the check will be in the account by the time the check arrives at your bank.

The answer is "b": you write a check for an amount that is higher than the amount of money you have in the checking account to cover it. When the bank of the company or person you gave the check to sends it to your bank for payment, your bank "bounces" it back to them telling them you don't have the funds to cover the check. Of course, there is the "float." If you would like to know what that is, you can e-mail me.

b. Exactly. If you wrote a check for $50.00 and you had only $45.00 in your checking account, the check will bounce. In other words, the check has to be returned to you , or "bounced back" because the bank will not process it. However, you may have a special feature with your bank for the bank to "debit your account" and pay the additional $5.00 to the payee. The bank would then collect the additional $5.00 from you WITH a hefty "overdraft" fee.

B. You have insufficient funds to cover a check you wrote.
