It is MRSA or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. It is a bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics but not all. It is either aquired in a health care setting (hospital, nursing home, ect) or community aquired (aquired anywhere outside a health care facility.) Pt's with a MRSA infection are kept in isolation and health care workers use protective means such as gowns and gloves while caring for the patient. Isolation protects the patient themselves from additoinal bateria and other patients that are on the nursing unit from aquiring the MRSA bacteria.

It is important to follow the nurses instructions when visiting a patient identified with a MRSA infection. Always wash your hands before leaving a MRSA isolaiton room.

Several sets of cultures will be done to find out if the infection is cleared. At least 3 sets of negative cultures need to be found in order for a patient to be cleared of MRSA. Some people are never cleared of MRSA.

The term MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staph aureus. It is a germ that is resistant to many of the antibiotics used to first treat infections. There are antibiotics that will treat this but can cause a more complicated course.
