Many reasons,
Drainage control is probably the most important. In houses with basements gutters channel the water away from the house. If water is allowed to puddle along the base of your house it may seep into your basement.
Also, water dipping off your roof will erode a trench around your house.
There's a lot of square feet over your head and when raining hard you can have a wall of water pouring over you front door.

without a gutter, the water falls off your roof in a sheet, and digs a trench in your lawn.
