I have a 2000 Kia Sephia and lately there is a high pitch noise that I can hear when I am driving. I wont even be touching the brakes and I can hear it. It seems to happen more when I turn towards the left, even slightly. When I first hit the brakes the noise happens also, but after the first few seconds of pushing down on the brake it goes away. The noise is really loud. I could hear it from inside when my husband gets home from work. He works like 40 miles away and I am scared the brakes are going to go out. I cant take the car in until tomorrow at the very earliest. Does it sound like just my brakes or more? Does anyone know how much it may cost? We just bought a house (we get the keys today actually) and we just spent our entire savings on our $41,000 down payment, so I am freaking out that it is going to cost me more than I can afford. THANK YOU!!!

You probably need new front disc brake pads, and the screeching may mean that the metal brake rotor surface has been gouged by metal to metal contact with the pads. If so, you'll have to pay to have the rotors removed and machined or "turned down" to restore a smooth metal finish. In that case, the total job will cost about $145, but if you need new rotors, the cost could run up to $235 or so. Unless you have a hydraulic fluid leak (check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder), it is safe to drive the car to the repair shop in my opinion.

Sounds like your pads are worn down. That high pitched noise is a tab on your pads to warn you of brake problem. Some stores will offer a free inspection and estimate on repairs. I use Big-O. Seeing that I do my own work on my cars(Monte Carlo, Kia Sportage), the cost to you should Not exceed 400>

It could be any one of a number of things, from nothing to worry about to extremly serious. Get it looked at so you will know. The Kia has disc brakes, and it could be the brakes making noise, or perhaps the wheel bearings...no way of knowing until you have it looked at. It may be as simple as just cleaning out the brake dust.
