Ok, I love metal and rock and what not but I've got to ask....why the screaming? (again I love metal, the screaming is my fav parts in songs) I mean who started it and why. Is it because of the guitar and drums being so loud?

Screaming is not exclusive to metal. I believe screaming is a way to show angst, anger and agression. Many believe that Rob Halford of Judas Priest started this, but it can be seen earlier from the likes of roger daltrey of the who and many others. In alot of hardcore music all they do is scream, it is just a way to express yourself as a singer.

I really don't know where it all started, probably from Iron Maiden or Judas Priest but then where they got it from is beyond me. Could be Led Zeppelin or AC/DC too. But yeah whenever I watch MTV2 on Saturday evenings (EST) there's always some commercial for a metal band and the lyrics are totally undecipherable. The screaming may also be caused by agression or by violent mood swings in which some cases the band is labeled "emo", short for "emotional".

In some bands (and only some) someone will scream to bring out emotion. My favorite band, and a good example, would be KoRN. JD only really screams when he needs to get the point across.

But other bands scream just to match the type of music. A lot of people have no singing voice at all.

it is a way to express your anger. imagine this. Metallica singing disposable heroes like mariah carey. scary huh? it wouldn't work becuase it wouldn't express the anger in the song. another reason is because it is just the style of music that they play. they like the way screaming sounds.
