D - the check has been received and cashed by the payee, and the check, in posession of the bank, has make their cancelation marks on the check so it doesn't get payed out again. Normally the checks are returned to the account holder, but many banks have begun scanning the checks and sending only a summary of the checks payed in order to cut costs.

d. been cashed and returned to you.

When a bank receives a check, they make payment to the person or organization that had it (the 'bearer') out of the account of the person who wrote the check. That payment is sometimes in cash, but more often it's just an electronic deposit. Once that payment is made, the check is cancelled - the transaction is complete. Checks used to be returned to you physically, but nowadays it normally just shows up on a statement, and you can see a copy online and/or get a physical copy of the cancelled check.

Could be none of the above. Of the choices you listed, D) would be the most correct.

However, with check conversion (Check-21), in many cases, the check is not returned to you after it is cashed.

It's D, been cashed and returned to you.
They used to stamp them cancelled kind of like a postage stamp gets a cancellation stamped on it when you use it.
The stamp cancellation was wavy lines just like that.
Sort of but they don't do it that way anymore.
But we might still hear people say cancelled check.
Because a cancelled check would prove that you paid something.
That that check had been cashed. A way to prove you paid.

d. A Cancelled check has cleared through the bank, the funds have been sent to the payee and deducted from the payer. When all transactions are completed, the check is cancelled.
