My baby has an appointment for Friday anway, but she seems to hate having the wax in her ear. I only clean the outer canal, not inside. Is there any safe remedy for this?

Try steamy wash clothes stuffed inside stiro foam cups. Place the cups over the childs ear for two minutes. The wet heat will loosen the wax and allow you to take a q-tip and gently wipe the excess, careful not to "sub-merge" the tip well inside the canal. Only get what you can see. A small amount of wax is needed to keep baby's ear free of debrie that might cause infection. Call your pediatrician for the best advice. The steamed cups also work for children on airplanes to defuse the "pop" on take off and landing.

The drug stores sell over the counter ear wax removal that is safe for any age (even babies). Just read the directions and when you see the wax out of the ear, gently wipe it away with a soft wash cloth. This worked wonders for my kids. IF it doesn't work, your doctor may have to do a "power wash" in the ears to get it out. This is not harmful, actaully tickles. You'll notice a difference. Good luck!

At any drug store there are ear drops called Debrox. Try that. My pediatrician has recommended that for all 3 of my kids, the youngest started using it at 2 months.
Here's an FYI for some people here too, not all earwax will progress out on it's own. This is not an opinion, this is what I've been told by my pediatrician (over 30 yrs experience)

When my kids where baby's I would wait until bath time.Because their body temp is higher and the moisture and soapy water helps break down the wax. Use soft tissue paper rolled into a cone shape, don't use to much. Gently twist the tissue into the ear,and remove the wax. I didn't like Q_tips because of the hard stick.

you can try installing a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, it's oxygenation will help soften and break up the wax. Then you can irrigate it with some tepid water or normal salie, During irrigation to not let the water be too hot or cold, this can cause dizziness and other CNS impariments temp.
Also mineral oil can help soften the wax as well.
since you are going to your pedi friday.. you can wait til then
ps. your not supposed to stick things like q-tips in anyones ear, it will just pus the wax back.

Wait until you talk to the doctor before you try to dig any deeper into your precious baby's ears.

Also, the following is an awesome book:
What to Expect the First Year, Second Edition by Heidi Murkoff, Sandee Hathaway, and Arlene Eisnberg (Paperback - Oct 16, 2003)

Do not use anything inside the ear. Eventually will come outside itself. Do not use Q~TIPS or something like that. I have a 3 years boy now and I used to clean his ears with Q~TIPS and that was worst. Let your doctor clean it for you. Keep cleaning the ear outside.

they make the ear candles that do not go inside the ear...but rather stay on the outside of the earand draw the wax upward and out of the canal.

they can be bought at most vitamin shops

Please, don't put anything in your babies ear. Wash the outer ear with a wash cloth and that's all. When you put a Qtip in it pushes the wax further in. Not good. Talk to your Dr about it.

Just leave it. They say you shouldn't stick anything smaller tyhen your elbow in a babies ear. The wax will work its self out to where you can reach it.
