That's exactly what I do. I use the word "like" a lot when I speak and I can tell that sometimes it really annoys people when I do that. It's just a bad habit and believe me I've tried to stop using it too much but I couldn't do it. It's not like (sorry) I do it on purpose or anything. I don't even know how I got this annoying habit. I know this guy who uses the word wayyyyy more than I do and it's annoying as hell, ( that's right, I get a taste of my own medicine) :-) So just be patient with us.

Your question is the funniest I've seen today. I'm a 22year old SWF and I don't talk like that, ever. Only valley girls talk that way. If you're 12 to 17 and a female you're going to speak "like" alot becuase that's all you know how to say. I love valley girls though, good for a laugh when I'm down.

The use of the word "like" signifies the description of things in terms of specific comparisons with other things (a simile). A young girl may habitually use the word "like" because it signifies a less sophisticated way of perceiving things around her, whereas a grown woman may perceive things in a more metaphorical way.

I think that it starts during the teenybopper phase, then it just sticks. I am guilty of using the word "like" occasionally, but not excessively. It pisses me off royally when I hear girls talk like that.

If Abraham Lincoln were alive today to hear what the english language has turned into, he would "like" have a heart attack.

I have had a contest with my cuz to see if we could talk without saying like and....it took 2 mins without saying anything except hi..because it fills up empty space and gives you time to arrange your words before they come out. and once you pick up on it its a hard habit to break...i have even got my bf saying it!
