Magic was designed way better. small creatures have a chance.
Yu-Gi-Oh is very fun and addictive but what good are all those small creatures.
Magic has a lot of things right. Upper deck needed to think about the rules a little more.
Both games are fun but I have to give Wizards of the Coast one up.

Magic is a great strategy game, but I feel it may collaspe on itself because of the sheer volume of cards available now. My collection currently is contained in 14 3-inch binders, and they still don't have all the cards currently available.

Yu-Gi-Oh is something I've never played, but I love the idea its based on Egyptian dieties. I'm not sure if the Gods are thrilled about being reduced to a card game, but hey, at least they've got a fan base again.

Magic the gathering is the best, but the only way to beat the toughest cards in yu-gi-oh is to have either Rat on Crack or Quit Embarrassing RED. Of course if you had both, you could accomplish what neither Hitler nor Napoleon could - you could conquer the whole world.

Both games are great. For me I prefer Yu-Gi-Oh more than Magic because of the game's simplicity and the ability to make your brain working while you calculate life points!

Being solely a Magic player, I feel my answers are somewhat biased, but here goes anyway. 1. The amount of strategy and playskill needed are much higher than yugioh. I was convinced to play exactly 1 yugioh tournament, because they needed one player to give out more prizes. I was taught how to play in 5 minutes... and I didn't lose all day. Magic, on the other hand, takes months to become good enough to win events. 2. The player base in Magic is more mature. Granted, in every game you have those jerks who make it unfun... but that percentage is much lower in magic. 3. Magic has much more potential to be competitive. With a full circuit of Pro Tours and Grand Prixs (including numerous PT qualifiers and GP trials), city champs, regionals, large prereleases in addition to the local store tournaments, you have a very large opportunity to be competitive if you wish. 4. In Magic, you can compete on a budget. $500 decks can easily lose to a deck of commons if built properly. Yugioh requires the newest most expensive cards to even be remotely competitive. 5. Magic cards never become obsoleted. Formats may rotate, causing cards to leave... but WotC never prints cards that completely destroy the overall balance the game has built up. There is no "here's a $30 card, and in the next set we are going to make it worthless". 6. Yugioh is designed by people who used to make Magic. Most of the Upper Deck management used to work for Wizards. If it weren't for those individuals, yugioh would have been dead a long time ago.
