There's a great interpretation of that phrase at songmeanings.net:

Apparently the song is based on a true event of a kid who shot himself infront of his entire class. If you ever catch the original video, they show "Jeremy" putting the gun in his mouth before cutting away to the classmates spattered with blood. But since they edited out that particular scene - it ended up looking more Columbine-esque.

I think it's all a metaphorical song. Kinda like the Columbine thing. It was sort of 'speaking in class'. I dunno how to say it in writing really.
