For the past few years Ive been getting urinary tract infections. The pain is so extreme sometimes. Idk how many times Ive been to the doctors for it and they give me meds but the doctor said next time I get it Ill have to go on a pill that I have to take everyday because I may have an oversized vulva? Doctor told me to prevent it to wear cotton underwear, pee after sex, wipe from front to back and Ive changed my soaps constantly. idk what to do. Is anyone else having this problem and if so is there something else I can do to stop? besides nasty cranberry juice!?

There are a couple of other things you can do.

Drinking lots of water is good.

I have never heard of an “oversized vulva” and I would bet that is some sort of BS, but it might not be. I am no doctor.

The big things are to make sure that you wipe front to back, pee after sex – like RIGHT after sex, make sure you rinse VERY well after you wash, avoid wearing pants, and avoid wearing panties all together – if you think you HAVE to wear panties (though I am not sure why – I haven’t worn panties regularly for years – but many girls seem to be VERY attached to them) wear cotton panties – but the best option is to not wear any panties. Kiegel exercises can be helpful for some girls.

i also have a question for you. do you take baths or showers? because girls who are prone to infections can get them from taking baths. i have a couple friends who can't do the bath thing for just that reason. i also know that eating yogurt with active cultures can greatly reduce infections. the body has natural bacteria that kills off outside germs and if you wash them away by douching or if you just don't create enough yogurt is a great way to put them back. this really works!!! one more thing, my mother told me about cranberry pills. the Dr told her that cranberry juice is too watered down to work. you would have to drink it by the gallon for it to work. the pills go directly to the kidneys and bladder before getting diluted to the point of no effect. my mom swears by them. she says you can get them at your local wal-mart in the feminine dept.

by the way, i have to agree with the other person who says "no" to panties. they are so uncomfortable!!! and i never have to worry about pantie lines any more. LOL!!!

Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses a day) to help fluch bacteria from your system. If you don't like cranberry juice take vitamin C . Both increase acid in your urine so that bacteria can't grow. Cranberry juice makes your bladder wall slippery so that bacteria can't stick to it. Also, consider modifying your birth control method if you use a diaphragm, spermicide or condom. Switch to lubricated condoms without spermicide.

All the recommendations your dr said are correct. other things might be not wearing tight clothing, not sitting with your legs crossed or for long periods of time. UTI's can be transmitted from partner to partner. So if you are sexually active you may want to have your partner checked out and treated at the same time as you if in fact this is the cause.. People never seem to think of it. including Dr's.

I have been getting them 2x a month now and i do not know what to do either... my dr. rx cipro and that helped until the following month... my kidneys are fine ... there is no medical answer as to why..... they told me the same thing, plus a high protein diet causes it toooo... cranberry juice is not a cure....they told me once you start getting them.. it is likely you will have them forever..... hope you do not feel as alone now... i share your pain..... literally.

I used to have the same problem years ago and i tried everything but the surgery to correct my narrow urethra..the only thing that stopped it was using condoms..I have no idea why it worked but it worked..not all the but we used one almost all the time and it was like magic.
