He has been in the hospital off and on a year. His mom lost her job. I want to do a benefit to help the family. She has to pay cobra to keep her insurance for the stem cell procedure. Where do I start? What are the legal issues for a benefit? How do I help this family?

find the people involved with the stem cell infusion (they come from somewhere) and see if they can help. Contact a foundation that deals with his specific condition, they can help. Then, you start asking places to donate space for the event, food, drinks, gifts to be auctioned, etc...Closer to the date of the function, contact the media. They will come in and do a short story on the event, and get people in the community who don't attend to donate cash. The more people involved, the more successful.

Go to a local newspaper and explain the situation, they could write up an article, then speak to a local merchant, i.e bank and have all funds sent to them ( that way you can't be held accountable) After that is done, make up flyers and go to all local stores, schools, etc and ask for contribitions(to be sent to the merchant you choose of course) Also maybe hold a community yard sale or craft fair announcing all prceeds will go to benefit your friends family. Good Luck & I'll say a prayer.

You can set up an account at your bank, and then tell people about the story and have yard sales and bake sales and any other type of money making idea you can think of. You can ask for donations and set up a pay pal account online.

I hope this helps, good luck!!! And GOD bless!!

I would contact a local TV station, they occasionally report on such benefits, and would likely have some useful info on that.
