It depends on what you bought for protection. Surge protectors come in various current stops. The higher cost the more protection. There is also a fuse in your telephone box, serviced only by the telephone company. Enough protection will keep your equiptment going but can get the fuse and everything is out till they get there.

With a surge-protector it should reduce the risk of over-load.
But me I'd switch it off & be too busy watching the storm to be on the Computer anyway.

Surge protectors help, but can not protect you if your house gets a direct hit. This can take out not only your computer, but all your circuit breakers, television, microwave, etc. These types of hits are fairly rare (of course, that depends on where you live), but if it really gets storming out there, I figure, "better safe than sorry".

I allways turn my computer off during storms. Even with an APC and surge protector, an electic arc can still go through.

I just read something the other day that said no--even with a surge protector there's no guarantee. Why risk it?
