If you like fantasy try the Dragon Jousters series by Mercedes Lackey. The first book 'Joust', is about Vetch a young serf who is rescued by a Dragon Jouster from his cruel master. He becomes a Dragon boy(one who takes care of dragons).Later he secretly hatches his own dragon. The later two books are about how he escapes to his native Alta and how the war between Alta and Tia ends. The setting reminds you of Ancient Egypt.
Take a Thief by Mercedes Lackey is about a young boy Skif who is ill-treated by his relatives. He later falls in with a gang of thieves and becomes a master thief.Later he gets bonded with a talking horse and is admitted to a Herald's College.
Also try the Famous Five book series by Enid Blyton. Its about 4 kids and a dog. They solve mysteries.
Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini
When his best friend, a young clergyman, is killed in a mockery of a duel by an arrogant noble, just to quiet his eloquent expressions of democratic ideals, Andre-Louis Moreau vows revenge. From that point, through meteoric careers as a consummate actor and scenario writer, then as a fencing master, and finally a politician, the brilliant Moreau keeps thwarting the aims of the aristocratic Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr. However, the nobleman causes pain to Moreau as well, and the time must come when the two will meet to settle their enmity once and for all. You are not likely to guess how their confrontation finally turns out. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, this swashbuckling novel is exciting throughout, and it presents one of the most dashing heroes in fiction, a man who can fight equally well with his mind, his mouth, his pen, and his sword, a man who stirs up events wherever he goes.
Chrestomanci chronicles by diana wynne jones is also for kids and young adults. But read it in the correct order
Also the Mars book series by Edgar Rice burroughs is quite good. He's the guy who wrote Tarzen. The princess of mars is the first book in the series. You can get his books from gutenberg.org.and the scaramouche too.

(i read most fantasy).. also i liked "Hoot" the book.let me think........."The Hobbit" was a good book and....."BFG" was a GREAT book! alot of Roald Dahl books r good so i recommend him.I also LOVED Alanna The first Andventure. Now if u look for it somewhere it might be put as "Alanna the first adventure" or "The first Andventure" or "song of the lioness" but its worth the looking for! believe me! Another great book is "A castle in the window" but if u dont enjoy piano and midevil times then it might not be that good to u.One more is "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" by Avi.its a REALLY good book! now as u can tell i love to read and i hope to write a book but i probbaly wont recommend THAT.hehe well hope u enjoy a couple of these!

Good light reading - Shane (by Jack Schaefer); Romance - Lorna Doone (by R. Blackmore); War chronicles - The Dam Busters (oops, I forgot the author); Science fiction - Nightfall short stories (by I Asimov); Short stories/various - Cricket on the hearth (by Charles Dickens); To be utterly disillusioned of life - Madam Bovari (by Gustav Flaubert - though i am sure you'd never get what it is of!) and so on.
I certainly recommend Lorna Doone - but make sure you get a new English edition as it is easier to understand that way, this book is victorian romance at its best. Shane, on the other hand is a boys book with lots of adventure and suspense and sure as anything very good read for young. Now don't go and read Dam Busters (true story) and Madam Bovari, as they are not intended for very young and might not be for your taste. But do read Asimov - Nightfall, the short stry version is the best science fiction ever and voted so. Easy to understand and thrill to read. If you just want short stories in general, go for Charles Dickens or why not Little Princess by F. Hodgsen?
I ask you to read not new authors as there is that magic in the books of the by gone age. read and discover. Enjoy and good luck.
