It depends on what kind of advertising job you want to do.
Marketing and Business are great for account management, and couldn't hurt if you wanted to go into strategy/account planning. Communications are also good, and so is Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology (the social sciences). Advertising is one of the few industries in which a Liberal Arts background is considered a plus--especially if you have developed great writing and critical skills. Some schools do offer an Advertising major, but I'd back it up with a minor in marketing/business, mathematics, finance or something that shows that you have depth to offer.
Also remember that pharmaceutical advertising is huge--if your education reflects a familiarity with medical terminology and issues, that will be a huge asset--likewise, financial advertising would be helped with a background where you're fluent in finance lingo and so on....
If you want to go into the Creative side, obviously you should major in whatever will generate the strongest portfolio for you. Also try to get as many internships as possible while you're in school--experience is essential, and often can lead into a job right after graduation.
Good luck!

Marketing is the best degree for an advertising job. Other degrees that could get you into advertising could be English (for copy writing) or Radio/TV/Broadcasting (for TV and Radio ad creation). Just remember that the degree isn't gloing to be the main thing to get you the job. To get a good position you will need internships or some kind of work experience that you can get while in college.

Maybe, but if you want to be in advertising, why not major in advertising?
You might be able to double major---advertising AND marketing. Or get a minor in one and major in the other.
