It does have some truth to it meaning that most problems will pale in comparison to the catastrophy you faced and those problems won't seem as hard as they once did.

depends on what you mean. if you are assuming that people eventually have to die of something, then yes, i believe it somewhat. Only somewhat because what if one got through the catastrophy on pure luck?
