Barbara Kingsolver's book "The Poisonwood Bible" was on a lot of reading lists years ago when I was in college, but I never got around to it since I was an English major and was too preoccupied with anthology authors such as Marlowe.
I think this is a fictional story, but based off of a lot of real places and cultures. It is a little long, but it is very well written and it is very easy to become lost (in a positive way) in it. I would definitely recommend it. I can see this book going down onto reading lists as a true classic.

Hi there. I'm the author of a new medieval fantasy book that you might like. It has received excellent reviews in the national media and is being considered for a movie deal. The title is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If you like Conan style books, you'll like this one. If you're looking for a Harry Potter type book, this may not be right for you.
If you'd like to try it out, I'll send you a FREE, 4 chapter eBook demo if you email me at FiveStarAuthor@aol.com. That way, you can see if you like the story or not without spending a dime. Cool huh?
Good luck, whatever you decide to read!
