You can file the paperwork yourself but IMO, if it's worth protecting by an LLC it's worth doing it right. Hire an attorney.

BTW, in California it costs a minimum of $800/yr to maintain an LLC (more if you have a big operation). Plus, be aware that California courts have been known to pierce the corporate veil of LLCs, so they are not iron-clad. But ask your attorney about Alaskan LLCs, which appear to provide far better protection.
