A dialog box is like a popup that shows up when you are using a program. For example, if you are in Microsoft Word and you hit File-Print, the dialog box that pops up gives you your printing options (number of pages, printer selection, etc.). Sometimes dialog boxes are just warnings, like an out of paper message from your printer.
Closing them usually entails hitting OK, Accept, Cancel, or other button on the dialog box itself. Some will have an X at the top right corner that you can use to close. If you can't find any way of closing it, you might want to try to task switch to it - hold down your Alt key and hit Tab a few times to get to the dialog box. If that doesn't work (and sometimes dialog boxes aren't listed there), you can try to minimize all of your open windows to see if it is hiding behind one of them. And if that doesn't work, you can always hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to see if it is listed under Applications (if you're using XP).
If it's something that isn't showing up at all after running through the above steps, rebooting will more than likely close your open dialog box. But if it shows up again, then I'd look into a virus or spyware scan of your computer in case there's something else afoot.
