People, people. Note that the question does not say the baby "NEEDS" water. I'm well aware formula or BM is the primary source of nutrition. However, we live in a very hot climate and I'm starting to let him work on a sippy cup. The general, informed response from those of you below seems to be around 6 months, so thanks for that.

A baby shouldn't have any water until she/he starts solids (not before 6 months old) because it can fill them up and make them less hungry for much-needed nutrition. As long as you continue nursing, you don't *need* to give water until 18 months old. Between those 2 ages, it is a personal decision.

My son is 3 months old and I have a small bottle filled with filtered water at room temp for him. I give a drink when he has a bad spit up to rinse out the yucky taste in his mouth. I was told by a number of doctors not to give a baby more than an ounce of water because the can have a seizure from too much water. I was informed that the formula also has water in it and that my son was hydrated. Sips of water was fine but nothing more right now. I hope this helped out a little for you....

Well, it depends on when your baby starts eating solids and the weather. I started giving my daughter water at 6 months, but they say a nursed baby doesn't need extra water. At 6 months, they also say that the baby should have no more than 4 ounces of fluids other than breastmilk (or formula) a day. In a hot climate, you could probably start at 4 months or so. Ask your doctor!

No no no you really shouldn't give them water at all not until they are 1 because they have tiny stomachs and if they fill up on water then they won't get the nutrients that their bodies need. Their formula will have enough water in it to keep them hydrated. If they start to get dehydrated then try some pedialite so they get the electrolytes they need for sustenance. When you start juice you can water it down with water but an actual cup of water and only water is just wasting tummy space.

Babies don't need water. If they are thirsty they should have nutritious breast milk or formula.
If you really want to give the baby water, try to wait until the baby is 6 months or so, and taking some baby food and other forms of nutrition as well. But they don't ever "need" it really until after a year old or so.

I dont believe that infant should drink water unless recommended by the baby's Dr. infants don't need the same diet than adults, for now breat milk or formula will do, the baby will get whatever he needs from them, if you want a more satisfying answer call your baby's pediatrician.

they don't "need" water, that's a myth. If you give them formula, then they get enough water from that. I know that u can give them water and juice in a sippy cup at 6 months. But talk to your doctor.

Doctors say not until 6 months. I've given my 3 1/2 month old water, though. No more than 2 ounces a day, though. Too much will dilute their blood system and cuase seizures.

they do not need water until after they are a year old, if you are breast feeding they get it from you so be sure to drink a lot of water your self. if they are on formula remember you are mixing it with water, so they will get it that way. water only takes up space in a baby's small stomach and really does nothing for them. they need milk.

I would say definetley not before six months. A little after that. If you are breastfeeding, and in a hot climate like you mentioned, your milk will have more water in it than normal, as long as you make sure that you are drinking lotsof water as well.
