It is old fashion but it's also a sign of respect. You could ask them at the same time. Take them out to dinner and in front of her ask her dad and then hand her the ring on your knee. See then that way the dad can't say no, not in front of his daughter. Good luck and congrats

Depends on what kind of relationship you have with your future father in law or what kind you want to have with him. I think most dads hate the fact that they lose their little girl, but I believe that if the prospective husband takes the time to discuss this with her father, that things go a lot smoother. It also shows him just exactly how honorable you are. So no, I don't believe it is old fashioned.

I think it says alot about a guy when they ask permission from the father for their daughters hand in marriage. It is old fashioned but that's what makes it so wonderful. I'm sure both your girlfriend and her family will respect you more for it. Good luck!

I am sure it would delight her to know that you cared enough to ask her father permission to marry you. Yes, it is a little old fashioned, but extremely romantic. After you get his blessing, then I hope you go the rest of the way and get on bended knee in a romantic setting to ask her. She will remember that night forever. Go for it! Good luck on your upcoming marriage!!

the old fashion way will make her parents feel more secure and they definitely will think you are the right man for their daughter. this is something guys just dont do anymore and if you do it, she will love you more and you are going to see how her family is going to welcome you as part of their family. I think it would be really nice for them and so sweet for her. this talks about what kind of values your parents taught you and what a gentleman you are. maybe some people will say: oh come one, you are going to marry her not the parents and even though is true, dont forget she's still daddy's little girl. good luck!

When my daughter came home and announced she and her boyfriend were getting married, I told them both that it is not an official engagement until he asks her father for her hand. Probably a bit old fashioned, but definately a huge step towards earning your future in-laws' respect.
Best wishes for a happy marriage!

It's old fashioned, but also very respectable. I'm 35 and married for two years, and spoke with both of her parents before-hand. It wouldn't have changed a thing, but I thought it to be appropriate. GL!

Forget about it being old fashioned, it is very romantic. If you ask her father for her hand everyone will know you mean business. I think its a wonderful idea.
Do it.

Oh my god, that would be the sweetest thing if you did.. you'd earn some respect by doing that... that rule is from the old school days, but i believe men still do it...
Call her dad and ask if you could meet him, theres something you'd like to talk to him about.. GOOD LUCK!

Even if your gf considers it old fashioned, she'll like that you respected her family. And it will smoth things over with the parents a little.
