Why do people hate to be considered inferior?
Why are people so bothered by others who think they are better than you?
My cousin was working at a sub-way when this young woman and her boyfriend came in to order a sub. My cousin asked what they wanted on it. They were very indecisive and another customer got in line behind them. My cousin politely told the new customer that she would be right with them. The young woman from the couple seemed to get annoyed and told her boyfriend that they should let the "professional sandwich maker" decide...My cousin took it to be a condescending insult...
What is it about us, as humans, not being able to tolerate other humans treating us as inferior? Why is it such an insult?

Arrogant people usually are people that have a personality disorder. In psychiatry, we Doctors encounter this frequently. One of the most common is Narcissism. It's characteristic of an individual who believes that they are right, the world is wrong, with an inability to feel empathy for others. This individual is usually extremely critical of others, but unable to accept criticism themselves. This description I've given would explain those people walking around who act badly in the public eye or even who have answered questions in "Yahoo question land". My advise would be to ignore these individuals because they're suffering from a personality disorder and need treatment.

They are lacking the confidence to ride through the perceived insult.
They already are feeling internally dissatisfied, or inferior in some way. Another persons comments, no matter how harmless or unprovoking, just suffice in drawing the internal feelings to the surface.
Chances are they were feeling that way anyway.
Your cousin may have been having a low day, feeling as if she wanted that cushy office job, instead of, simply being satisfied to just be employed. The customer could have said she was the BEST professional sandwich maker, and it still may have been painful to hear.
Most folks like that, just need ignored...let them work through their personal pitfalls. They will try to drag you into it, feeding on your personal optimism.
It truly is something they need to overcome for themselves.

Because I suppose for most of us, we don't want to be insulted simply because it's not nice and it messes up the balance of happiness. Most people want to walk around being happy and having other people be happy with them unless they did something for that other person to feel that way, then guilt sets in. But for the most part if they did nothing wrong they are feeling guilty for no reason.

i'm sorry but if i was in the store first and the gal behind the counter wanted to help someone who came in behind me, i would be pissed because that is poor customer service. maybe your cousin should look into the janitorial field.
