Manhole covers are round because one of the strongest shapes against force put on it is a cylinder, so stand it on end and you have a manhole, but they are also triagular. Nashua, New Hampshire has triangular manhole covers that point in the direction of the underlying flow.

If it was rectangular, square, or triangular it could be turned in a direction which would allow it to pass thru the hole leaving an open hole in the street to drive off into. Since this would be really bad they made them round so that no matter which direction they may get turned they will not fall thru the hole.
