Speaking as a teacher, and as someone with some knowledge of science and history, teachers are doing you a disservice if they are NOT teaching evolution. Evolution is science; evolution is real, and evolution is happening right now. Read Charles Darwin's _Origin of Species_ and see for yourself. Darwin was very concerned in 19th century Britain about offending the religious sensibilities of people, but he was a rational man of science. He contended that nothing in nature is offensive to religion.

I wonder about how this question is phrased. Do only the boys in your school find evolution "stupid"? Do the girls find evolution to be scientifically valid? How is your teacher presenting this information? Is where you live very religious or very open and tolerant? I know being from Louisiana originally, and now living in California, how different things can be, from a student's perspective as well as a teacher's perspective.

Good luck with this. Go back to the source and READ DARWIN, and make up your own mind, based on facts, not superstition and/or religion.

Good luck, K

The teacher is certainly not doing you a disservice by teaching you evolution. It is a proven fact. And for those who would argue that evolution goes against the teachings of God, I ask you why? Why is it so hard to believe that someone powerful enough to create the world couldn't create species that evolve? There are plenty of theories out there that can combine biblical teachings with scientific fact. If you must believe thatat the world was created in 7 days, fine. But why can you not consider that the duration of a day in God's eyes is infinitely longer than anything you can comprehend as a mortal? If you want to believe that God created man on the 6th day, that is fine. But why can you not believe that the man he created millions of years ago, might look slightly different than man does today? I'm not trying to put down anyone's religion, but religion is supposed to open you mind, not close it. Evolution is a fact, not something that was made up just to anger you. There is still plenty of wiggle room to incorporate what we have learned with modern science into what the bible has taught us, why not give it a try?

The interesting thing here is that you have creationists on one side who are unwilling to grant that much of the principle of evolution makes sense and answers a lot of questions.

On the other side you have scientiests who refuse to acknowledge that the idea that all creation can be explained by evolution involves stretches of probability that make mathmaticians blush.

Me, I kind of like Intelligent Design. The idea behind that is that evolution works, but needed a push or nudge here and there to create the mind-bogglingly complex and vastly specialized life forms that exist today.

Think about it, all kids think everything they're taught regarding science/math is stupid and useless. Evolution is in the spotlight right now because of the debate, so the "this is stupid" feelings intensify because the kids feel that if they heat the debate, they might actually weasel out of learning something.

You don't have to embrace it, you just have to know it so you pass the course and have the metal readiness for college once you graduate.

They're doing you a favour, i suggest you take advantage of it.

First of all, evolution is taught as a theory, not fact, so it doesn't offend the non-believers. Secondly, there is a ton of scientific evidence for evolution. If your question is implying that teaching evolution is bad and that creationism needs to be taught, then I suppose you are going to suggest teaching fairy tales as fact.

My teenagers have discovered the two at Catholic college - the religious tale of Adam & Eve and evolutionary concept (contained in the context that there is a few actual info that God used micro-evolution to create the international).

Evolution is the unifying principle of biology. No biologists disbelieve in evolution.

Here is a link to a lot of creationist claims about evolution that are simply not true, and why they are not true:
