I absolutely agree with all of the previous answers. I just wanted to stress getting a mentor. Having someone who has been through tryouts and a few years of cheerleading is an invaluable asset. She can show you correct positions, give you tips, and critique your performances. Don't be offended by constructive criticism, it is for the best!! Good luck!

First thing you should do is start stretching. Get yourself limber. Learn how to do the splits, cartwheels, and any flips would be a bonus. If you have natural rhythm, then that is good. If not, start practicing with someone who does. You have to know how to follow directions very precisely. Start practicing your "yell". Remember, a good strong "yell" comes from your diaphragm and not your stomach. This is kinda funny, but I have always taught that to learn that technique, you have to imagine "pushing" while on the toilet. That is where your "yell" needs to come from. Funny yet true.

Also, start going to all the games and competitions, learn what the cheerleaders are doing. Maybe even tape them and then watch it at home and start practicing. Hard work and dedication will be the key on this. And by all means, stay limber!

Good luck.....
