Linux is vastly superior to a DOS batch file. A batch file is simply a list of DOS commands to peform with very limited decision making or input capabilities. To make a batch file do anything even remotely interesting you need to write (or find) small executable files.

To be fair, linux shell scripts should be compared to the Windows Scripting Host system, which is vastly superior to batch files and, arguably, to Unix shell scripts.

Microsoft has not revamped their batch interface from the early DOS days. It is still the same. It is not very easy or intuitive to use the Windows batch interface. However I heard that they are revamping this for the Windows Vista. I cannot comment on that since I have not seen it.

According to me obviously the Linux is better. Linux has lot of command line utilities - hence it is always possible to do a lot of things. It is very flexible. Is it possible to get a remote web page using Windows batch program? Possibly no. Use wget in Linux for it. How to send mail from Windows batch? Use sendmail in Linux/Unix. The list goes on an on.
