Go thru his photos and find photos of him and his loved ones and of his life over the past 50 years. Get a large piece of plywood, cut the pics in fun shapes and make a large collage. After all the pics are secured onto the wood, brush on some polyurethane to seal it all together. Throw on a really nice frame and a sheet of glass and you've got the coolest gift he'll be able to look at every day for the next 50 years! Good luck!

Few Ideas:

- a book on gadgets
- take him to a Science & Tech museum, or an Auto or Sportsmen Show - spending time with him would probably mean more than anything you could possibly buy!
- tell him you'd like to go mud bogging with him next time (whatever that is), and you'll buy lunch
- give him a gift certificate to his favourite store where he purchases his tools and gadgets

You could take him on a fishing trip, or golf for the day (if he is into these kind of things). Or maybe plan a family bbq out at his favorite lake and make sure he brings his toys so he can go mudbogging.

Give him a home-made coupon book of things you will do for him over the next year, i.e., wash his car, mow his grass, treat him out to lunch, supper, breakfast, cook him a meal, go out to the movies, etc. He can cash in his coupons at the times of his choosing and it will be the gift that keeps on giving.
