Yeah I play it. Totally addictive. It's like crack...except it's a video game.
I'm not kidding, I'm managed to sucker my coworkers into playing it. My husband plays it.
I like it better than CoV, EQ2, FF, GW.
I mean I am an MMO Junkie and I have to tell you that this is the best there is.
6 million ppl cant be wrong.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_warcraft
I've been playing since it started.
The lag has gotten much better btw. Only problem is Tues maintanance and large patches. This is a relatively small problem.
I mean if your options are 'do it' or 'don't do it' - I say go for it!
Be prepared to become a zombie with no life...it seems to happen to all of us. Like I said, it's more addictive than crack.
You can read up on it at www.worldofwarcraft.com
It's easy to play. Don't get overwhelmed by the idea of race, class, and profession....Just pick a server, make a good looking character, choose what class (warrior, mage, priest, pally, et cetera), and go for it.
Make friends and they'll help you out. People are real nice. If you want them to be nicer, play a chick....then you can't keep them away...guys'll do anything for a girl.
www.thottbot.com for game tips
Pallys tend to still be the uber class. If you are just starting I suggest doing a Pally til you get the hang of it. They're like a healing tank (to some extent).
Worry about professions once you get out of the noob area. I wouldn't even think about it now. You'll make more money being a farmer...so I personally wouldn't do anything like smithing, leather working, alchemy, tailoring, enchanting...
I would do a combination of mining, herbalism or skinning. This way you can sell your goods on the AH and buy the junk you need. This saves you time and money (spent on recipes and training).
As for the response above, you can change the look of you char! You can't change it as MUCH as EQ2 but look at the lag EQ2 has! The more variations you have, the longer it's going to take to load, the more lag you're going to have.
In one breath you complain about lag/perfection and in another you state that you want to be able to customize your char more. You can't have it all. This is state of the Art compared to all other MMO's. Sounds like the guy in the last post needs a new video card...cause I don't have problems with WoW.
Just be sure your machine can handle it and you'll be fine. The monthly fee is nominal. It's silly to complain about a $15.00/mo fee in this day and age. That's the price of 2 'Fatfood' meals. >.< ppl will B*tch about anything!
BTW - you need to read up on choosing a server. They have pvp, rp-pvp, rp, and...(carebear) environment/regular. (I might be for getting a few. I play on an RP server because there are less lil kids on RP servers.)
Do not play Guild Wars, it's junk. I can send you links to Completely Free Online MMOs that are 110% better than Guildwars. For onething the graphics suck. Everthing outside them main city is an instance so unless you group before you leave you will have no contact with other players.
EQ2 is good. A lot of older adults play it. It's more mature. Everything takes longer. Wow is more of an 'instant gratification game' where as you have to work hard to do accomplish much on EQ2. The reason I stopped play it was b/c of the lag. That and they kept respecing chars. So everytime I got on I would have to reassign my abilities. It was becoming a serious problem for me.
I didnt like Final Fantasy Online b/c it's so dramatically different than what I'm use to. I didn't give it a fair chance....but it seemed very complex. The registration process was a lil scary b/c they want your CC number then they charge you per char, with stipulations on canceling. With EQ and Wow you can make as many chars as you want. Plus the guild set up was a nightmare on FF...I didn't like the graphics....
Between all MMO's on the market, go with WoW or EQ2.
Ok email me if you have Q's.

i played WoW for 3 years, since the beginning. it was fun. You can play, chat, raid with people from around the world (mostly the country though). There's over 20 servers and there are different type of servers: normal (mix of PvP and PvE), PvP realm, RP (roleplay). The money is fair, it's not the cheapest thing in the world, but it's cheaper than some other games. It will run with a mac. You only have to pay $20.00 every 60 days for a pre-paid playtime card or pay by credit card. Basically, you start off as a "hero" you can pick and choose a race and class, each with their own special abilities, some racial abilities. It depends on what you want to do in the game. Rogue = in your face straight up melee dps (damage per second) and contributing to the group with your damage Warlock = Ranged caster dps, different specs i.e. demonology where you rely on the pet, affliction burning down the opponent with your damage spells, destruction- big shadow and fire blasts. Mage = pretty much the same as warlock, can make water and food, more crowd control warrior = usual tank, can be dps if specced for it, usually the leader Shaman = healer, dps, totems druid = healer, dps (melee or caster), tank, many buffs Paladin = best as healer or tank, can be dps. Priest = usually healer, sometimes dps if specced for shadow. You can choose to group with people or go solo. if you want to chat and stuff like that, then dungeons aren't really necessary. If you want to raid and be with a group that has the same goal, it's best to join a guild which is a group of people that form....a guild i guess (can't think of any other word.

I've been in love with Blizzard games since I was 14 years old. I remember starting with Starcraft, moving onto Diablo, then finally finding my true love and passion, World of Warcraft. I've been absolutely addicted to this game for the past few years now. It's such a beautiful, mysterious, but often complex and complicated world of mystery and intrigue. I have, at many times, found myself where you may be now... confused or stumped in some way- and not knowing exactly where to turn or what to do. Or maybe just unsure of how to advance, or reach the next level in my gaming experience. These road-blocks ranged from very simple, basic, or otherwise minor problems to complicated and complex issues. Both technical and in-game. I did and still do find GREAT help, on ANYTHING WoW related, within the infamous Zygor guides at http://www.zygorguides.pcti-system.com .. These guides are like the Bible of WoW, the Encyclopedia Britannica for anything World of Warcraft. My go-to guide for just about anything and everything. And unlike others, these guides are integrated IN-GAME. Listed below are some of the things that currently come to mind:
-1-90 In-Game Leveling and Loremaster Guide
-Dailies and Events Guide
-Dungeon and Gear Guide
-Professions and Achievements Guide
-Pets and Mounts Guide
-Titles, Reputation, and Macros Guide
...The list goes on and on.
Anyways, I hope I was of some help to you. Above all, my greatest recommendation to you from personal experience, is DON'T FORGET that there is still a REAL world out there! Lol. The biggest problem for me that I've come across is my absolute addiction to this game. Like many others out there, WoW has taken over much of my life and free-time. Proceed with caution! FOR THE HORDE! :P

Yup. At first, I thought, there is no way I am going to play an online game with monthly payment. I was playing Guild Wars and I loved it. I just need to pay for the CD and ofcourse my internet bandwidth which you can get for just a little amount of money nowdays.
But then I heard the name "WOW" too many times that made me curious.
So there I was with my first paid online MMORPG I bought.
The first impression that I get was, its too toonish, so walt-disney movie alike (Hercules, for example).
And then, whooaaaa, the map is huge and there are wide range types of classes, proffesions and specialism of the character you can choose from.
Too bad that the look of the character that you can choose is not so vary.
And one of the drawback of the game, is the downtime of the server and ofcourse, as many other MMORPG's problems aswell: lag time.
But in WOW case, it's not a common thing.
But still, I have paid monthly so I expected only perfections :p
oh yeah, leveling in WoW is not that bad compared to the other MMORPG.

I do! It's hugely addictive and fun. There are some points when it slows down a little, but if you invest a little time it gets WAY better afterwards. It is definately a good investment.
