One of us is shorter and plus size and the other is tall with a medium build (but not plus). We all want to be comfortable and look good. Oh and we'd like to look hip (for bridesmaids).

When my daughter got married in 2002, she had 4 bridesmaids who were all vastly different body shapes and sizes. What she decided to do was pick the color she wanted the dresses to be (lilac) and let each bridesmaid choose the style dress that best flattered her figure. It was a nice way to do it and it was a beautiful wedding.

I got my bridesmaid dresses from David's Bridal. I chose the strapless A line one. It looked good on everyone and everyone felt pretty. The girls were from 5' to 5'7" from size A to C cups and from size 3 to size 12 waists.

fluid A-lines to the mid-calf work to create a sense of "sameness", and shawls to match the dress gives each girl a uniform upper body.

May I submit though...
The worst thing I see in weddings today, is too much boob! This takes away from the dress, the wedding, and makes one person stand out over another(Why spend all that money just to have all the guests talking and gauking over an overabundance of cleavage).
If strapless is desired, then have the seamstress alter the line to lay above the cleavage line. This will keep everyone looking beautiful and uniform.
Just remember, the main focus is to be on You, the bride. Noone else! They'll have their day! :)

Not to offense the person above me but Davids Bridal is sort of cheap because I went ther efor my sisters wedding and there stuff fell apart for all of the bridesmaids. Try designer dresses or something that everyone likes.
