Because each individual state has decided the age at which they feel a person is old enough to make decisions for themselves based on relationships/sex. If your state says that a person age 16 years old or less is not old enough to give consent, than it is a felony for an adult to be with that person. The state has made the decision that that 16 year old is not mentally mature enough to make the decision on their own. They make these laws to protect the those not of age from adults that may take advantage of them. A 16 yr old and another 16 yr old are consider to be of equal mental status, therefore neither is able to take advantage of the other....do to a greater mental maturity.

Because a grown person knows better and their intent is to use and sexually abuse you because a 16 year old is gullible and will believe anything you tell them. The adult is a sexual predator and will lie and use you for his own gratification. Not saying that a 16 year old boy wont be trying that same thing. 9 times out of 10 he will be but he is at least the same age and you both can be punished.

The law believes that the adult would be in control of that relationship, with the ability to coerce the 16 year-old into doing things that he/she would not do if it were a relationship with someone their own age.

hello! age difference. 16 year olds think about the same, whil most of the time, adults are way more mature than 16 year olds. Its like taking advantage of some one younger. Plus, its kinda creepy...... Isnt that kinda what Micheal Jackson did?

because its the law. if you had a 16 year old daughter you wouldnt want a man old enough to be her father dating her now would you? if you do something is seriously wrong with you.
