Depends what you want. Seafood restaurants are overpriced, but the ones at the end do have nice views (i.e. neptune). There's a small place in the middle that has good, cheap (relatively) clam chowder. North Beach pizza's opened a pier 39 branch and they have a lunch buffet. Blue chip cookies are there too.

Yes. As far as I'm concerned, with one exception, they all share a common underground kitchen. It ain't great. They don't have to be - you are already trapped in San Francisco's biggest tourist trap! The one exception is Scomas. However, there is a problem with Scomas. Frequently the wait is so long that you have quite a bit to drink by the time your name is called. By then, you are so inebriated that you won't notice that their food is any better than the rest.

I highly recommend that you go to one of two very special seafood restaurants. Neither is in the Fisherman's Wharf area - they are both in the Financial District. They are both among the ten oldest restaurants in San Francisco. One is Sams Grill (415/421-0594, 374 Bush Street, between Kearney and Montgomery streets). The other is Tadich Grill (415/391-1849, 240 California Street, between Battery and Battery streets).

Neither takes reservations. The food is exceptionally good at both. I prefer Sams (I don't believe they are open on the weekend). Sams is usually less crowded and a better chance of getting one of the private booths. Both serve a mean martini !

Avoid the over-priced, mediocre tourist traps along the main streets and go find Scoma's, on a back wharf a bit off the beaten track. Scoma's is the place where the locals go for authentic old San Francisco Italian seafood.

If you go to Fisherman's Wharf, you've got to ask for the white clam chowder in the sourdough bread bowl.

It's a tourist tradition ;)

I agree with fogjazz49, Scoma's has the best seafood and clam chowder in the whole entire city of SF. It is famous for us San Franciscans and it is famously visited by stars like Sly Stallone, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Marlon Brando, etc. Sports Athelets often goes there as well. I can guarentee you that you won't be disappointed.

Excellent clam chowder. A must visit for a first trip to SF. As is China Town, Berkley, Sausalito...enjoy!

Go to Bubba Gump Shrimp. Or go to the market and buy the fresh caught fish, crab, etc. Great shopping, very touristy. Go to Ghirradeli square and get the free samples of chocolate.

Love it! Love walking around and smelling the seafood. The clam chowder is amazing, but the bisque is not. Great crab!

Clam chowder is always good. Go to the side and try many of the section with shrimp, and crab cocktails.

It sucks. Only tourists go there. But if you must go there, go to In n Out. The Embarcadero is a very pleasant walk though (though beware of bikers).
