Jewelry wise, I would stick with necklace. Gold only (not silver, platinum, or "white gold,") at least 14k. If a pendant is involved, avoid pearls or very large stones.
DO NOT try to fool her with cubic zirconia or any other phony diamond. She WILL find out, and you will be known as "that guy" for the rest of your/her life.
If a store person is helping you, be sure to tell them you want something "tasteful."
