im here in australia where the Pontiac GTO is produced. its doner car, the Holden Monaro, ended production this year. it was never destened 2be a big seller her, but sales have slowed and room is needed for extra production of Middle East products and the all new VE Commodore(Zeta platform, the platform for the re-born Chev Camero) This is how the story goes...
Monaro was shown as the commodore coupe concept at the 1998 Sydney Motor Show. in 2001, production started at Bob Lutz found it as a great re-placement for the Pontiac GTO. so a deal was set-up to produce 18,000 cars a year for the US. good news for local company Holden (set up by GM in late 1940's)
The Monaro took the Commodore(family car in sedan, wagon, ute & LWB) platform, which was already 5 years old in 2001, and built a coupe body on top, for the price of $60 million(Aus dollars)so once it got 2 da US, it was 18 months old, platform nearly 7 years old.fairly old for a car.Pontiac, not Holden, changed suspension settings, and determined the spec.We built a great car, only for u guys 2 ruin it. Add ugly spoiler, wheels that wernt tough enough(there were better, but pontiac insisted), lower BMW prices and the GTO had a battle. Its a great car, WAY better built then most american sh*tboxes and better looking(we didnt add those oversized foglights/daytime running lights)
There will be NO re-design, because GM has not given the go-ahead for a new Monaro, yet US will b rewarded with a new camero. this may form the basis for a new monaro. plans were in place for the new monaro/GTO(designs well ahead) but GM US's problems stuffed that. This is the truth.no lies,no bullsh*t.its an old car(platform now 9 years old) and isnt built like most aussie cars r these days.heres a better idea. build our new VE Commodore in the US as a re-baged Pontiac and re-designed Chev. With a killer new SS(Gen 4 V8, 6-speed auto) cheap bas models, and high-performance HSV(much like SRT, xcept we were first bak in da 80's) u guys would love it.no wonder u guys dont buy GM/Ford. anything good comes their way, they screw it up.that or u all love the camry way 2much(then again, better than GM products).

The GTO is NOT ending production! The GTO is scheduled for a complete redesign in 2008, and the 2007 car did not meet some new federal requirements to be sold in the US (something to do with airbags), so instead of spending millions retro fitting 06's to meet 07 standards GM decided to give the GTO a year off.
As for it being crap, it may not look like the old GTO but it will outperform the old one across the board, in terms of performance there is NO comparison. I like muscle cars and all but their legend far exceeds their capabilities, most were high 13 / low 14 sec cars at best, today we have family sedans that are almost as fast!

Well then you'll be glad to know that this will be the last year for the GTO.

What were you expecting? To look like the old tempest or something?
It may just be a re-badged Holden and Vauxhall.... but it isn't bad looking.

They've ruined a classic, just like Dodge ruined the new Charger/Challenger.
