Its hard to read. It looks like 1851, but I can't see the last digit.

Without having an exact date, it's pretty tough for anyone to accurately tell you what it's actually worth. There should be a coin dealer in your area, who if you brought it in there, could magnify it and possibly read the date on it. They would also be able to share with you a more accurate value.

I'm a collector myself, and most pennies I've run across are usually worth more than just the $.01. Again, in most cases I've found them to be worth $.15 each. While it's not a lot of money either way, the collector (like myself) would rather keep them than spend them. Or even sell them as part of a collection, which offers a larger value.

Good luck!

I'm a coin dealer in the Midwest. What you have there is a Braided Hair variety Large Cent. This particular style was made between late 1839 and 1857. By the sound of it, it's in relatively poor condition if you can't make out the last digit. Assuming it's dated 1851, a safe assumption as 1851 is a fairly common date, it's going to probably be worth somewhere in the $7- $10 range. Again, the value is based on the assumption that the coin is in poor condition. Hope this info helped.
