First and foremost, you can't "teach" your baby to sit up when you want him to...you have to let him do it himself, when he's ready. :) His back muscles have to develop, and his neck muscles have to be strong enough to hold his head up so he doesn't fall backwards on the floor or take a face dive into the carpet. :) If you want to prop him up with the Boppy, place it flat on the floor and sit him in the circular, cut out part in the middle, taking the two curved sides that sort of touch in the middle, and wrap them around his legs or stomach. That will sort of prop him up...just make sure you keep a hand behind him to prevent him from falling backward sharply and potentially hurting himself. You could also make yourself into a human Boppy and sit him up between your legs, and let him rest the back of his head on your stomach, if that makes sense! Both my boys sat up by themselves (even though they were wobbly) beginning at about 6 months or so.
Also, Shirleypower has a good suggestion...just make sure you're sitting with your baby at all times if he's on the sofa. He could kick and squirm and end up sliding down from his propped up position and falling off the sofa.

It'll come naturally sometime between 4 and 8 months. Just give your baby plenty of floor time and tummy time to help him or her develop muscles. Hold him or her in a sitting position sometimes too. I used a bumbo seat too which you can use as soon as he or she can hold up her head. I got mine at Target. The boppy works better after the baby can pretty much sit up and just needs a little support to balance.

The best way to prepare your child for sitting up is lots of tummy time; this will allow better head and trunk control. We used the boppy alot, placing our baby on his tummy with the boppy across his chest and under his arms.

My son is 7 months now and he has been sitting up for about a month now own his own. I used to prop him up on the couch and put pillows around him, putting a boppy around him helps but in all actuality i think the baby has to be ready. It takes practice like trying to sit him up and put toys around him but once his back is strong enough he'll be a pro at sitting.

With all of my children I never used a boppy as a sitting device. Sure I would put them on it or use it during nursing but would never use it just for teaching them to sit. They learn real quick to lean on that and it defeats the purpose of them holding their own weight.
With all my children I started as soon as they were strong enough just sitting on the floor with them and sitting them on the floor and helping them balance themselves. I didn't hold them in my lap but I did have my hands there for support and balance. Making them figure it out on their own but not letting them fall and hurt themselves!
All my children were sitting on their own before they turned five months.

Actually, you *don't* need to teach your baby to sit up. She/he will learn it without any conscious help from you!! Trying to get her/him to sit up before she/he is developmentally ready won't help in any way. It probably won't hurt the baby, but it *is* a waste of time. Instead you should spend your time together playing, talking, singing, etc.

I got a Bumbo chair for my son and it's really helped him. Since he can hold his head up well, it gives him the support to sit up on his own. Since he's only 5 months old he hasn't mastered it yet, but he's getting there. I got mine at Target, but I think you can get them pretty much anywhere. Just my suggestion
