Are you talking about the individuals or the group? They originally were from Sicily and they transplanted here. We have them here in Vegas. I know they have roots in Chicago, NYC and just about everywhere there is action. The mob boss stays there until he dies/gets killed. It's rather a monarchy. I compare the mob bosses to the Queen, the Princes and the Parliament. It's just like that, actually. The Queen is the mob boss who hands out orders. The Princes are the son/sons who will go in her place some day. And Parliament is the rest of the Italians in the "family" by comaprison. They act as a group and sometimes overthrow the Queen/Mob boss.

It was a gang in Sicily. Because the laws a different there, they have guilt by association. If someone was arrested for a crime, the family and sometimes friends would be arrested too. When they came here, it was possible for one person to admit to several crimes in order to get others off the hook. In trade for this their families were taken care of, and they had jobs waiting when they got out of prison, so it became a very bid organization over here. (US)
