Maybe they think tea stains are easier to remove than coffee stains from their teeth, and they think they can one-up everyone who disses them on the state of their teeth by continuing to drink tea.

I still drink tea more than coffee but that is how I was raised, being a Brit and all. I think a lot of it is stereotypical. Like on shows all Brits drink tea at a certain time in the afternoon. That might be the way it is for the queen, but not the rest really.

I find it funny to be mocked for drinking tea and coffee by some super-sized fat-burger whose ideal drink has bubbles in it, and is drunk through a straw. (not the questioner, I hasten to clarify)
In fact, I usually drink more coffee, unless I can be 4rsed to make a pot of tea. I recently discovered green tea, which makes things simpler, so I've been able to cut down a bit on my coffee habit. Tea is far more civilised.

maybe the Brits just wanted to be different. Maybe tea was more readily available than coffee. I'm sure there is a logical explanation as to why, but I am not the one to give it to you....

It's part of their culture. Why do Americans drink more coffee than tea?

Not just Brits, dear. Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world -- second only to water.
Excuse me, I'm going to make some tea... thanks for asking
