OK, this probably sounds like a stupid question to the "car buffs" but I would like to know. :-D I recently got a car from my parents that has very little paint left on the hood (a lot of rust). Are there engine problems that can occur because of lack of paint on the hood (in other words, does paint offer any protection?) I'm in TX so the heat can be intense, so I wonder if it makes it easier for my engine to over-heat if there is little paint on the hood to reflect the heat or whatever.

No, you silly girl. But if it will make you feel better sand the rust off of the hood and paint it with some white primer, (which would be really cool ifyour car is already white)

No affect.

If you are worried about heat in Texas, here is a really cheap modificaiton you can do that will cool your engine and can actually improve the performance of the car.

You need 4, 8 or 12 washer spacers depending on the thickness of the washers.

what you want to do is remove your hood from its hinges (One side at a time) and place between the hood and the hinge some spacers. Do both sides and make sure the hood still closes (in the front) properly. You may need to adjust the hinges a little to get it to close right. The back of the hood will stick up a little bit. This might not look as good, but judging from the condition of the car as you describe it, it will not make a big difference for you.

What is happening: Cooler air is forced into the engine compartment. Engine runs cooler. Intake air is cooler as well which means better performance.

How it works: When you are driving, the base of the windshield has more air pressure that just about anywhere else on your car. By lifting the hood a little bit, you give that pressure a release and air is forced through the engine compartment.

No. But you may want to at least consider paint. Even if it is in a can. If the hood rust through, and the elements get in, that will cause problems.

An ounce of prevention is worth a Pound of cure. Right

Paint might offer protection from the sun's rays. But to do actual damage, I don't think so because if that were the case, then A LOT Of cars would not run. I have seen A LOT of cars that didn't have paint on them, but they were still running.

No, it would have little to no effect on the engine. The engine usually gets warmer than the sun would heat the metal of the hood so it isn't an issue.

No, although I would try to get some rusty metal primer on it before it rusts through completely. There is a type of primer that bonds with the rust so you dont have to sand it down.

No, it does not affect your engine, it just makes the car less attractive. If you are really concerned, you can spray it with primer. Good luck !! If engine is over heating, check the radiator for cracks.

paint doesnt help anything but the looks of a car. maybe you should sand and primer the rusted areas just so it will look better.

Paint is Cosmetic only. It has nothing to do with the mechanical part of the car. You can email me with your problem and i may be able to help. Good luck.
