Well, it depends on what you mean by "irregular." If you are constipated, you need to eat more fiber in your diet. If you have diarrhea, it could mean lots of things, from an infection to eatting too much dried fruit

Depends on what you mean by irregular. Did you used to have a BM everyday and now it's every 3 days and then every other day, etc.? Are you comparing your bowel habits to someone's elses? It's not necessary and is perfecly normal not to have a BM everyday. It can be harmful to go more than 3 days without one. But if your bowel habits have changed, look at your diet, your fluid intake and your activity level. Increase dietary fiber, cut down on starchy foods, increase water and walk or otherwise exercise more. Give this 4-6 weeks (and be conscientious) but if it hasn't made a difference, see your doctor. There may be an underlying condition that is the source of the problem. It would also be helpful to keep a "diary" of your BMs: The date, time, color, size, consistency (hard, soft, runny). You can show this to the doctor if a visit becomes necessary.

Not everyone has a bowel movement every day at the same time. Keep track on a calendar to see how regular you are. Do you have one every third or second day? As long as you are going on a regular basis, eat plenty of fiber, drink plenty of water, you should be OK.

straight up fiber isnt the tastiest, so you should be eating at least 2 fruits a day, like an apple and a banana.
bowel is mostly affected by diet, but you should also try a little exercise.

Get more fruits and vegetables in your diet, real fruit juices, applesauce, prune juice, also you could try a laxative, like fiber con. some hospitals mix milk of magnesia with prune juice, sounds awful, but you don't need much.
Once you change your diet and get some roughage in it, like lettuce and things with seeds, and start becoming regular, give up the laxatives, they are not good for you all the time, because they are unnatural.
