This is what makes being friends after a breakup so hard. This is even worse because it sounds like he broke up with you because of his work and not in regards to any problems between the two of you. I'm sure he still cares for you and loves you to some degree or he wouldn't bother to continue to talk to you. The thing is, if he really loved you then he wouldn't let his job or anything else get in the way of his love. You need to tell him that he either loves you and wants you in his life or he needs to step out of your life completely so you can deal with the pain and move forward.

Its hard to judge someone off such little info, So my opinion is from messed up things I did when I was single.
In this story I would be out playning, out of sight out of mind, on nights I was not with someone I would call because I was lonely and I know you would answer, also increases chance of hooking back up with you when I came back to town. Yes he might still care for you but without a full, true comitment from him you need to do the right (and harder) thing and move on,
True friendships only start after a period of time without talking to each other, 3 months for every year dating.

love is a "2-way street", meaning... loving him still is not enough reason for you to get back with him. YOU NEED TO KNOW IF HE STILL LOVES AS WELL.
Try to make a deeper study if he still loves you as much as you love him. Then if you are sure, he is still in love with you, then, you have all the reason in the world to try to talk to him and win him back.

Next time try making him know how u feel about him and ask him whether he still care for u.If the answer he gave u is not serious try forgeting him.
