yes there is a way to format a CD RW that let you use it much like a hard drive. Roxio calls it DirectCD. Any major CD burning software has something similar

Yes. With most CD burners, there is a software utility that is included with the driver disk. There is one called "Direct CD" which does exactly that. You could probably find a free program that does that on download.com.
