Well I am on more in the evenings, After dinner instead of watching TV I get on for about 4 hours or more. However I also check on things during the day. A lot of people do searches all day long.
For people who work at night they would be on around afternoon, and those that work in mornings are on in the evenings. Since most people work in the morning I would have to say evenings are most likely to have more people.

There is no good way to know how many people are online at any given moment. The Internet is just way too distributed with too many things going on to get a clear count of moment to moment individual users. The site below gives a number of about a billion Internet Users on the planet total.

From looking at the logs of the dozen or so sites I run, Wednesday is the most popular day of the week in terms of raw visitors. Don't know why.
